Have you ever experienced songs playing in your mind involuntarily during Exams? Hey I can hear your YES and We are Same Bro! The struggle to memorize our books is Real, but song lyrics is cakewalk. We all know many people who struggle with studies yet master song lyrics seamlessly. we’ve been that person too at a point! Have you ever wondered why the words from textbooks are easily forgotten but we still manages to sing along to our favorite song without any errors? Pique your curiosity and continue reading..!

Well! Concentration , Enthusiasm , Repetition , Connections , Rhyme and Pattern always stands first when you try to lay down things in mind. You plug in your headphone, select your track and start to track the music and lyrics subconsciously scroll in your mind as you were aware at that time that “ yes, I have plugged my headphone in and what will come next to my ears ”, so you become enthusiast about the words that will be played there after. Also if you had heard a part of the song, your mind will try to maintain the track with those words which you remembered earlier and the word you are listening now. Here your enthusiasm boosts and follows your presumption.

Contrary to this, when we study in the class. Most often the things are quite new to us and we don’t have enough presumption and data about these in our mind so we don’t get that much enthusiasm. Also, you have noticed the same thing when a subject or topic which is your favorite or which you are aware about from earlier, you show your whole efforts and enthusiasm in that subject because your mind contains enough presumption in it that this subject is good enough to give your efforts.

Lets Dive Little More into What actually happens in Brain…

Memory itself is composed of three storage systems. They’re spread across three networks and each has a different responsibility in the memory making process. These three networks are encoding, long-term memory, and recall. Encoding is the first step in creating memories. Takes information and holds it in short-term storage. Depends on how much attention you’re paying to the new information. It’s more similarly like paying interest and attention to a totally new topic in class, if u pay more attention initially you can go with the flow of context else you will lack attention which distracts the memory making process through encoding which further effects to store in long term memory thereby you start to struggling to memorize.

Long-term memory encoding relies mostly on semantic encoding, but not exclusively. Because human memory is fundamentally associative, new pieces of information are remember more easily when associated with knowledge we already have anchored in memory. Short term memory that obtained through encoding can be repeatedly contemplated in order to rely this context into Long term memory. Lyrics/Music we listen will be repeatedly recalled that help it to long lasts in long term memory.

The last network is the recall network, or the recall system. This network is responsible for finding the information stored within your brain. When I asked you about Mahendra Singh Dhoni, the answer will be most likely popped in your head a second or two after you read the question. The recall system activates our higher-order thinking skills in order to help us find the answer.

So Why can you remember lyrics over related facts & formulas? The reason is simply because they are paying more Attention, Interest, Enthusiasm to the songs than over related facts & formulas. The more Attention, Interest, Enthusiasm you pay, the better their brains encode the information. Also with all things in life, practice and repetition helps strengthen that memory. people probably listen to their favourite song on repeat, rather than information introduced in class, making it easier to recall song lyrics over key facts and formulas.
